Yoga offers far more than just physical movement — it’s a holistic practice that nurtures both the body and mind, and it can be incredibly beneficial even for toddlers and preschool-aged children. At MT Coolum, we incorporate simple yoga practices into our daily routines to help children develop body awareness, self-regulation, and a sense of calm.
Our educators use poses like Tree Pose for balance, Cat-Cow for flexibility, and Child’s Pose for rest and grounding. These gentle movements are woven into storytelling, transitions, and relaxation times to help children manage their energy levels and emotional responses. Research from the Raising Children Network highlights how yoga in early childhood supports mental health, improves focus, and reduces anxiety (source).
But yoga at MT Coolum isn’t just about quiet time. It’s also a fun and interactive way for children to learn about breathing, mindfulness, and the connections between movement and feelings. We often combine yoga with music, puppets, or imaginative play, turning each session into an engaging, sensory-rich experience.
Our yoga activities are child-led and adaptable, allowing each child to participate at their own pace. Educators model the poses and language in a way that is accessible and inclusive, celebrating effort over perfection.
Families are encouraged to continue these routines at home with short sequences such as “morning stretch” or “bedtime calm down.” These practices foster consistency, help children prepare for transitions, and strengthen the connection between learning at the centre and home life.
By introducing yoga early, we help children develop tools they can use for a lifetime — from managing stress to fostering a positive self-image and strengthening motor coordination in a joyful, age-appropriate way.
