Mother’s Day is about more than just cards and gifts — it’s a beautiful opportunity to teach children the value of gratitude. We believe that helping little ones recognise and express appreciation lays the foundation for kindness, empathy and strong relationships.

So how can we nurture gratitude in young children this Mother’s Day? Here are a few thoughtful ways to get started.

Talk About What Mums Do

Young children don’t always notice the small things their mums do each day — like packing lunches, giving cuddles, or helping with tricky shoes. Take the time to talk about these things with your child and help them see all the ways their mum shows love.

Try asking:

  • “What’s something your mum does that makes you feel happy?”

  • “Can you think of a time Mum helped you with something?”

Model Gratitude

Children learn best by watching the adults around them. Use Mother’s Day as a chance to show your own appreciation — for your partner, your own parents, or carers in the community.

Even small gestures like saying, “I’m so grateful for the way you always help with dinner,” can go a long way in teaching children the power of a kind word.

Encourage Thank You Notes or Messages

A handmade card or a simple “thank you” can mean the world. Help your child create a note, drawing, or video message to say why they’re thankful for Mum.

You might prompt them with:

  • “I love you because…”

  • “Thank you for…”

  • “My favourite thing about you is…”

Make Gratitude a Daily Habit

While Mother’s Day is a great starting point, teaching gratitude is something that can continue all year round. Try creating a gratitude jar at home or in the classroom where children can add little notes each week.

You can also end the day by asking, “What’s something you were thankful for today?”

Gratitude helps children build stronger relationships, feel more positive, and become more resilient. This Mother’s Day, let’s go beyond the flowers and gifts — and plant the seeds of thankfulness in our little ones’ hearts.

From all of us at Mt Coolum, we wish our families a joyful, gratitude-filled Mother’s Day.
