Term 4 is a key stretch of the year for term 4 school preparation, as our oldest children move closer to starting Prep in 2027. At Mount Coolum Early Learning, our kindergarten educators use this term to focus on the practical academic and social skills children need for a confident start to school.
Here is how we approach term 4 school preparation, and what families can expect from our programme over the coming months.
What Term 4 School Preparation Looks Like at Mount Coolum
Our term 4 school preparation focus builds on the whole year’s learning, with extra emphasis on the routines and expectations of a classroom setting. This includes:
– Longer periods of focused, seated learning, such as group stories and discussions
– Structured mark-making and early writing practice
– Number recognition, counting and simple pattern activities
– Following classroom-style routines, including transitions between activities
According to Education Queensland, children benefit from a gradual, supported transition into Prep, with familiar routines helping to build confidence. Families can read more about starting Prep on the Department of Education’s website: https://education.qld.gov.au/schools-educators/ecec/about-prep
Building Academic Foundations Before School
Alongside social and emotional readiness, our educators introduce early academic concepts in playful, age-appropriate ways. Children explore letters and sounds through games, practise counting through everyday routines, and build problem-solving skills through puzzles and construction play.
Term 4 school preparation is never about formal lessons or pressure. Instead, it is about building familiarity and confidence, so children arrive at school ready to learn.
By the end of the year, most children in our programme can:
– Recognise and write some letters, including their own name
– Count and compare small groups of objects
– Follow two- and three-step instructions
– Manage their own belongings and personal care tasks
Practical Ways Families Can Help With School Preparation
Families can reinforce term 4 school preparation at home with simple, low-pressure habits, such as practising the school morning routine, reading together each day and talking positively about starting school.
Our educators are always available to discuss your child’s individual progress and answer any questions about the transition ahead, so families feel supported and well informed throughout Term 4.
